WHAT'S RoboCup?
RoboCup is an international research and education initiative. Its goal is to foster Artificial
Intelligence and Robotics research by providing a standard problem where a wide range of
technologies can be examined and integrated. The concept of soccer-playing robots was first
introduced in 1993. Following a two-year feasibility study, and a Workshop held in Osaka, on
November 1996, In July 1997, the first official Conference and Competition was held in Nagoya,
Japan. Followed by Paris, Stockholm, Melbourne, Seattle, and Fukuoka/Pusan, the annual
events attracted more and more participants. The last RoboCup-2002 involved 1004 participants
and 188 Teams, from 29 Nations, and attracted 117,000 visitors. Today, more than 3,000
researchers from 35 countries and regions are participating all around the world in various
projects such as international competitions, conferences, research and educational programs.
Following previous Conferences and Competitions, the 7th RoboCup will be hosted in the City
of Padua (Italy), by PadovaFiere, in cooperation with The University of Padua, in July 2003.
